We are nearing the end of our current economic dynasty and boy are we getting antsy to get to greener pastures. We have been here before. Ranching was Alberta, it is still a part of Alberta, but gone are the days that it is our anchor industry; the one that pays our bills. We moved ... Read More »

As I sit here in Airdrie (just having returned from a short walk “to and from” my local grocery store), I contemplate whether the feeling in my hands and feet will ever come back due to this -28 degree (plus wind chill) cold snap most of Canada is suffering through. On top of that, while ... Read More »

The squeaking wheel will always get the grease. Sadly those who make the wheels squeak are often malcontents with thin skin who take offence needlessly. In that regard they take to social media to air their perceptions. As a result they get others to sympathize and soon they get laws that dilute our freedoms. The ... Read More »

The Alberta Treasury Branch is a pseudo bank not regulated by the federal government under the Bank Act. It is solely a Crown corporation (department) of the UCP government. Back in the 1980s under the leadership of conservative King Ralph (Ralph Klein) they blew $400 million on a West Edmonton Mall deal, gave Larry Ryckman, ... Read More »

Tommies, we called them. I was a boy of eight, in Germany at the time, and the Second World War was still very much still going on and, yes, we had all kinds of names for the soldiers on the other side. Some not exactly very nice, but some actually expressed a certain amount of ... Read More »

In 2006 we tried doing hip and knee replacements in publicly-funded private clinics. Health Resources Centre in Calgary was doing 900 orthopedic surgeries per year. In 2010 it declared bankruptcy and the taxpayer was left responsible for the outstanding costs. The health authority acknowledged at the time that they had no choice but to pay ... Read More »

Recently Cypress-Medicine Hat MLA Drew Barnes wrote an MLA Report and praised the Saskatchewan government for its balanced budget. It is true that they are anticipating a $300 million surplus. Barnes attributes this to the hard work of Saskatchewan conservatives controlling spending, particularly in remuneration to public sector workers. This, although true, only considers a ... The submission of this is the result of being a member, discussions with other members and over heard conversations from other users in the coffee room with respect to the use or lack of use of this facility. This will touch on a few issues that would improve the environment and attendance. The first issue ... Read More »

This week I’ve been following the reports from Thunder Bay on The Current. Of course Thunder Bay is not the only community with a drug problem. The problem is here, too! Have you heard that insanity is defined as keeping on doing the same thing hoping for a different outcome? That is how drug policy ... Read More »

I have appreciated the Laying It Out columns by Scott Schmidt in recent issues of the Medicine Hat News. In the most recent, on Jan. 4, I am thankful for his commitment to finding the truth. It seems he has done due diligence in trying to find the truth and share it. We need this ... Read More »

Re: “Decision by Kenney, UCP was an abuse of power,” Dec. 24 I am in total agreement with what Gregory R. Cote wrote. What is so disturbing is that many Albertans do not want to question the validity of Jason Kenney being premier, after the things that have been going on, including him firing the ... Read More »
