There’s plenty buried in the ATB filing cabinets

By Letter to the Editor on January 16th, 2020

The Alberta Treasury Branch is a pseudo bank not regulated by the federal government under the Bank Act. It is solely a Crown corporation (department) of the UCP government. Back in the 1980s under the leadership of conservative King Ralph (Ralph Klein) they blew $400 million on a West Edmonton Mall deal, gave Larry Ryckman, ... Read More »

Soldiers always ready to step up

By Letter to the Editor on January 15th, 2020

Tommies, we called them. I was a boy of eight, in Germany at the time, and the Second World War was still very much still going on and, yes, we had all kinds of names for the soldiers on the other side. Some not exactly very nice, but some actually expressed a certain amount of ... Read More »

Health must become patient focused again

By Letter to the Editor on January 15th, 2020

In 2006 we tried doing hip and knee replacements in publicly-funded private clinics. Health Resources Centre in Calgary was doing 900 orthopedic surgeries per year. In 2010 it declared bankruptcy and the taxpayer was left responsible for the outstanding costs. The health authority acknowledged at the time that they had no choice but to pay ... Read More »

MLA Report didn’t tell the whole Saskatchewan story

By Letter to the Editor on January 13th, 2020

Recently Cypress-Medicine Hat MLA Drew Barnes wrote an MLA Report and praised the Saskatchewan government for its balanced budget. It is true that they are anticipating a $300 million surplus. Barnes attributes this to the hard work of Saskatchewan conservatives controlling spending, particularly in remuneration to public sector workers. This, although true, only considers a ... Let the seniors run the Veiner Centre

By Letter to the Editor on January 13th, 2020

The submission of this is the result of being a member, discussions with other members and over heard conversations from other users in the coffee room with respect to the use or lack of use of this facility. This will touch on a few issues that would improve the environment and attendance. The first issue ... Read More »

How Canada tackles the drug problem is ‘insanity’

By Letter to the Editor on January 10th, 2020

This week I’ve been following the reports from Thunder Bay on The Current. Of course Thunder Bay is not the only community with a drug problem. The problem is here, too! Have you heard that insanity is defined as keeping on doing the same thing hoping for a different outcome? That is how drug policy ... Read More »

Applauding writer’s commitment to finding the truth

By Letter to the Editor on January 9th, 2020

I have appreciated the Laying It Out columns by Scott Schmidt in recent issues of the Medicine Hat News. In the most recent, on Jan. 4, I am thankful for his commitment to finding the truth. It seems he has done due diligence in trying to find the truth and share it. We need this ... Read More »

New name, same bad behaviour

By Letter to the Editor on January 8th, 2020

Re: “Decision by Kenney, UCP was an abuse of power,” Dec. 24 I am in total agreement with what Gregory R. Cote wrote. What is so disturbing is that many Albertans do not want to question the validity of Jason Kenney being premier, after the things that have been going on, including him firing the ... Read More »

North Flats Neighbourhood Association provides a vital service to families

By Letter to the Editor on January 8th, 2020

Medicine Hat needs more organizations like the North Flats Neighbourhood Association, not less. Our family’s eldest daughters have been attending NFNA’s summer programming for the past three years. As a low-income family, we struggle with the financial costs associated with enrolling our children in most forms of local programming since we often fall into the ... Read More »

UCP sure knows how to blow money on nothing

By Letter to the Editor on January 3rd, 2020

After 50 years of almost continual conservative governance in Alberta you would think that whatever conservative government is in power would have a sense of financial discipline. Yet here we are at the start of 2020 and Jason Kenney’s $30 million “war room” got caught using another company’s copyrighted logo. No matter which way you ... Read More »
