Destruction of Tweed House a tragic loss

By Letter to the Editor on September 27th, 2019

Re: “Historic home brought down,” Sept. 24 It is a profound sadness for us and to the many people of this city ro see the Tweed House come down. It appears all the efforts and the coverage were in vain. It is a sorry state when the City of Medicine Hat does not have a ... Read More »

Libraries should be thought of as an essential service

By Letter to the Editor on September 25th, 2019

If I understand it correctly, the new UCP government’s coming budget will include, among many other targets for serious cutbacks, the library systems. I believe libraries are very much an “essential” service, like fire departments, police services, hospital emergency services and some other services that should and are felt to be very essential. I cannot ... Read More »

Stifling opinions not an aid to democracy

By Letter to the Editor on September 25th, 2019

I am disappointed by Conservative leader Andrew Scheer’s stance on abortion. Scheer may personally hold whatever views he wishes but preventing his future parliamentarians from addressing that or any other issue is not an aid to democracy. Principled legislators should be able to introduce motions on whatever matters concern them or their constituents. Are we ... Read More »

We must stop throwing rocks at those we don’t agree with

By Letter to the Editor on September 24th, 2019

Last week Time Magazine sparked another political brouhaha when it printed a 2001 picture of Justin Trudeau in costume with his face and hands blackened with makeup. I’m not condoning what Trudeau did, nor justifying his actions in the least. Was it poor judgment? Of course. Was it malicious intent? Who knows? We’ve all done ... Read More »

A new hobby found following grandma’s death, a starry night

By Letter to the Editor on September 24th, 2019

When my grandma passed at the end of July it was sad because I had spent time helping her with personal care in her home. She passed away in the morning and that night I was with some friends outside. I asked God in my heart if she was with Him. Shortly after we saw ... Read More »

Alberta needs revised equalization status

By Letter to the Editor on September 21st, 2019

Re: “MLA’s flawed argument made before by some on Alberta’s political right,” Sept. 13 Letter writer Greg Cote has, unfortunately, fallen into the dilemma of leaping to criticize political opponents of his socialist, “ilk” before thinking it through carefully. I use the word ilk because it was used by him. It refers to a “type ... Read More »

Proposal doesn’t meet stated redevelopment plan objective

By Letter to the Editor on September 21st, 2019

As a long time resident of First Street S.W. I have concerns regarding the proposed changes to the corner of First Street SW and Division Avenue South. Firstly, I am opposed to the demolition of a house that has been a landmark in Medicine Hat since the early 1900s. Our history is precious, easily changed ... Read More »

Give inmates a better chance upon release

By Letter to the Editor on September 21st, 2019

There is a problem within the parallel of our justice system. Inmates are mistreated in most institutions and food is scarce, not to mention we are the less fortunate province when it comes to things such as programming and education within our remand Centres. I think every province in Canada has an individual television in ... Read More »

MLA’s flawed argument made before by some on Alberta’s political right

By Letter to the Editor on September 13th, 2019

Re: “MLA Report: Alberta deserves a fair deal,” Aug. 30 Brooks-Medicine Hat MLA Michaela Glasgo tells us that “Through federal taxation, Albertans have contributed over $620 billion to the federation since 1957.” I will accept that number as accurate, even though Glasgo does not tell us its source. I do submit, however, that the figure ... Read More »

Faith community helps reader push through

By Letter to the Editor on September 13th, 2019

I spend a lot of time in community in various different non-profit organizations. They are very diverse ranging from mental health to a theatre group. My most important community is my faith community. One of the most important dates of the year is when we share worship with St. Ambrose Anglican Church in Redcliff. Their ... Read More »

A different tax plan to stimulate the economy

By Letter to the Editor on September 11th, 2019

The United Conservative government should not lower the corporate tax rate, hoping to stimulate the economy that way. It should instead give corporate tax reductions to the rich. Why not give a $1.50 tax break for each dollar invested in specific industries. This would encourage investment where we need it. Reducing the corporate tax simply ... Read More »
