Get out of the way of people like Greta Thunberg

By Letter to the Editor on November 4th, 2019

Re: “Clugston not interested in invite to Thunberg,” Oct. 16, Mayor Ted Clugston has stated “I’m tired of people calling carbon dioxide pollution; it’s a basic building block of life…. This needs to be dealt with intelligently and is in no way an emergency.” We are also told the mayor has a university degree in ... Read More »

Budget explanations disappoint

By Letter to the Editor on November 2nd, 2019

I looked forward to the end of the provincial election campaign. Perhaps, I hoped, the partisan hype, bluster, and political spin would die down a bit. Maybe with a budget and detailed legislative proposals we would enjoy more rational, respectful and fact-based discussion. Naive, of course. Recent statements by representatives of our new UCP government ... Read More »

PM should be talking to Kenney

By Letter to the Editor on November 1st, 2019

To be a significant Canadian, you need to live in Ontario and, yes, Quebec. Heaven help us, don’t forget what Quebec does for Canada’s image and status! What would Canada do without it? Well, ransom wouldn’t be freely paid from federal coffers. We should be grateful here in Alberta. “To give is better than to ... Read More »

Searching for a relative half a world away

By Letter to the Editor on November 1st, 2019

I realize that this is a long shot but I am trying to locate a distant relative in Canada. His name is David Venus and he is/was the son of William (Bill) and Gladys Mabel (nee Randall) Venus who were immigrant prairie farmers in the Medicine Hat area in the 1940s and 1950s. David would ... Read More »

By Letter to the Editor on October 31st, 2019

I have been writing letters to the editor for a long time now. When I first started I belonged to an organization called Mood Disorders. Mood Disorders was a peer support group for people for mental health consumers and I belonged from 1996 to 2008. In this 12-year period I got to know a lot ... Read More »

Canadians will be watching closely

By Letter to the Editor on October 30th, 2019

We have entered a into a new phase in Canada’s political history as for the first time we have two large ongoing separatist movements. In the west, the Wexit reaction due to alienation, and in the east with the macabre revival of the Bloc Quebecois, once thought to be dying. We have a government with ... Read More »

There’s only one way to get change

By Letter to the Editor on October 30th, 2019

It may not be what some Westerners want to hear but the only way any changes will be made to Confederation is if Alberta is serious about separation from the Canadian colonial system that was established in 1905 to the detriment to Alberta and Saskatchewan. It was written to follow the system of English colonialism ... Read More »

Pining for the good old appliances

By Letter to the Editor on October 26th, 2019

This newspaper’s Hot Property section on Sept. 20 advised updating or replacing energy-using appliances to curb fuel consumption. I, however, find the new appliances to be mixed blessings. My updated furnace may burn less gas than the old one, but it requires more maintenance and produces less heat. One can’t count on significant savings on ... Read More »

Thunberg deserves more credit for her climate knowledge

By Letter to the Editor on October 25th, 2019

It may well be true that Greta Thunberg doesn’t understand the petroleum industry in Alberta but it is certainly as probable that those opposed to her actions and beliefs don’t understand the realities and dangers of climate change and environmental problems well as she does. Having a degree in biology as claimed by one of ... Read More »

Alberta can benefit

By Letter to the Editor on October 23rd, 2019

Greta Thunberg’s visit brings focus to an opportunity for Alberta to embrace the worldwide transition away from a fossil fuel-based economy and ensure long-term prosperity. In a 2018 report from the New Climate Economy, the impact of bold climate action is estimated to present a direct economic gain of US$26 trillion by 2030 compared to ... Read More »

AHS taking action on privacy breaches

By Letter to the Editor on October 23rd, 2019

Re: “AHS isn’t taking personal patient information seriously enough,” Oct. 11 The editorial suggesting Alberta Health Services (AHS) is not doing enough to adequately protect patient information raises some important points requiring further elaboration. There can be no question that all Albertans expect their health information to remain confidential and secure. This is the law ... Read More »
