All Psyched Up: Give thanks with a grateful heart

By Linda Hancock on October 12, 2024.

Ruth Klaassen is amazing! I not only have the privilege of knowing her as a Westman Village neighbour but also have enjoyed several hours as the beneficiary of her wisdom and kindness.

Often people tell me that they have hopes and dreams that are unrealized or trauma that has shaped them. Many state that they would like to write a book. Well, Ruth has had such an extraordinary life filled with a combination of trauma and thanksgiving that we all need to take notice.

In September of this year, at the age of 94 years, Ruth has published a book entitled “In the Shadow of My Heart” in which she documents her life journey.

On Jan. 3, 1970, Ruth’s husband Harry, and several children went to Toba Inlet for a boating trip. One of their children was ill so Ruth stayed home with him while Harry took others out on their 22-foot cabin cruiser. Two days later the weight of the tragedy was fully experienced when the bodies of Harry, his children David (18), Arthur (17), Timothy (15), Grace (11) Linda (9), friend Jimmy Faulk (14) as well as niece Heidi Meyer (8) had all been recovered by Search and Rescue near Cape Mudge.

Following this, Ruth instantly became a single parent and needed to build a life for her only remaining son Johnny and her.

Imagine the sight of a community funeral with a lineup of coffins, each of which held the children and their father!

Most of us would have trouble surviving such a tragedy but Ruth has thrived. In fact, she is not only an inspiration when she personally shares her story with others but now has everything in written format for the benefit of us all.

The sub-title of Ruth’s book is “Tragedy so Big, but a God so Much Bigger.” That certainly leads us to recognize where she found great strength for the days ahead.

Ancient scriptures claim (I paraphrase): Be thankful for your troubles for difficulties lead to perseverance and perseverance develops character. Ruth certainly has a strong character!

If you would like a copy of this book, you can request it through Ruth Klaassen’s email jo9466@telus.net. It will not only touch your heart but also encourage Ruth who has invested so much into this book.

It’s kind of sad that we need to have a Thanksgiving weekend to remember to be grateful. This fascinating book and story remind each of us to look for blessings – despite the tragedy that life can bring. (And remember to not just talk about our own goals but work to reach them, even if it takes until we are 94 years of age)!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
