Events are more than gatherings; they are transformative experiences that bring communities together through shared creativity, collaboration and celebration. Organizing an event is one of the most powerful team bonding experiences, requiring collective effort, flexibility and problem-solving.

From planning to execution, events demand the sharing of ideas, expertise and labour, creating countless opportunities for people to connect and work toward a common goal.

Like a live theatre production, an event involves many moving parts, and once the doors open, everyone involved is in it together. There is an undeniable energy in the air as hours, days, or even months of preparation come to life before an audience. This audience is the final, unpredictable ingredient – sometimes adding an element of surprise that elevates the event in unexpected ways.

Attending an event is more than spectating; it’s about becoming part of something larger that was dreamed into existence. This shared experience fosters a sense of belonging and connection.

Art in Motion is a First Street festival that celebrates Medicine Hat’s unique art, culture and community spirit. It serves as a platform to showcase the talent of local organizations, vendors and individuals, reflecting the diverse creative skills of our city.

According to Oxford Languages, art is “the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination.” At Art in Motion, this definition comes to life through a wide range of artistic expressions – from live painting and pottery making to skateboarding stunts performed by the Medicine Hat Skateboard Association.

Visitors can immerse themselves in interactive art installations like Annette ten Cate’s whimsical world of green hills and rabbit warrens, where you can build a bunny and take photos against a stunning backdrop. Join the local Fibre Arts Club to participate in yarn bombing, adding unexpected splashes of colour to downtown.

Explore the creative offerings of more than 50 local vendors on First Street and discover fine art at the market hosted by the Hat Art Club in the Historic Ewart-Duggan House.

Creativity at Art in Motion isn’t limited to visual arts; it extends to the culinary scene with 12 local food trucks offering an array of delicious treats. Savour the best of Medicine Hat’s street food while connecting with friends and neighbours. The festival also boasts family-friendly entertainment at multiple locations, featuring a mix of local and provincial talent. From Canadian Bollywood dancer Karima Essa and Juno-nominated children’s performer Will Stroet of Will’s Jam to local favourites like the Derek Hintz Trio, Wheels, Monster & Cake, the Cannonball Knights and Saamis Immigration’s SHINE, there’s variety and diversity for all preferences.

At its core, Art in Motion is a collaborative creation. It’s shaped not just by organizers, event staff and volunteers but also by the artists, performers, vendors and, most importantly, the attendees. Each person who participates, whether by organizing, performing, or simply showing up, contributes to the festival’s unique character. Together, we build a vibrant event that reflects our community’s spirit and fosters a sense of place and belonging.

Art in Motion is more than a festival – it’s a celebration of our collective identity, creativity and resilience. It reminds us that when we come together, we can create something extraordinary, something that embodies who we are as a community.

So, join us, be the final ingredient and help us shape an experience that will resonate far beyond the festival grounds.
