The word has gotten out and having an Art Party for kids’ birthdays at the Esplanade has become a very popular choice.

Since last fall we’ve seen a record number of booking requests; sometimes more than we have spots available for! We are full for July and August at the Esplanade so TREX Space, downtown on Third Street is now booking Art Parties on Saturdays this summer for kids aged 7-12.

What exactly is an Art Party?

It’s a children’s birthday party with fun and creative art projects. The hands-on instructions and all the art supplies needed are included in the booking price.

A typical timeline for one of our three-hour parties is from 1:30-4:30 p.m. This allows you to have 30 minutes to set up decorations, gifts, game, and snacks before the guests arrive for the party from 2-4 p.m.. Our qualified art instructor will take the lead from 2-3 p.m., instructing the partiers in a creative art project from a list of available choices selected at the time of booking. From there you will have an hour to play games, open presents or feed the kids while the instructor is cleaning up the art activities.

The final 30 minutes is for saying goodbye and packing up the decorations and other items you may have brought.

Projects options at TREX Space for Art Parties include: Evening Northern Lights Scene, using soft pastels and charcoal pencils; Cherry Blossom Brush Painting which uses simple bamboo brush painting techniques; or Watercolour Ocean Jellyfish in which colour mixing and colour wash techniques are taught.

I think Ink Blot Creatures is my favourite art project. A child’s imagination can run wild with this activity. After filling an eyedropper with black India Ink and splattering ink onto the paper surface, kids will play with the ink to create their desired shape. They will then blow air inside the wet ink blot to create thin lines that look like fur texture, hair, arms or horns!

How unique and exciting is it to hold your child’s birthday party in an art gallery?
