Eye on the Esplanade: Some thoughts from our volunteers

By EYE ON THE ESPLANADE on October 15, 2021.

Some thoughts from some of the Esplanade’s volunteer staff on working at the local facility.

“I find the experience fun and rewarding. I enjoy the atmosphere and working with the other volunteers makes you want to be there. It has been a lot of fun volunteering in the Discovery Center with the Art Classes for the kids. It is nice to be in a place that appreciates what you do.” – Rick McCaw

“I volunteer both in the Museum and in the Archives. The staff are very knowledgeable and friendly, and I learn a lot from all of them.

I first started volunteering upon my retirement from my full-time work of civil engineering. I was already involved with the Medicine Hat Museum & Art Gallery as it was known at the time, (1991), as a member of the Museum Board or Directors, so when that board was dissolved by the City I began my new ‘career’ as a volunteer. I am always learning about the history of Medicine Hat ands its surrounding area and I like to believe that I am making a useful contribution by checking, updating and recording new information and accessions. During those processes I have uncovered many things of historical significance not only to myself but in may instances of interest to the staff as well.” – Alan Waller

“My volunteer time with the Esplanade has provided me with a variety of opportunities. Greeting the public and sharing the amazing shows and works makes me so proud of this venue. Fellow volunteers have become new friends and there is much joy and laughter during a volunteer work session.” – Jill Reid

“After this past year of COVID isolation, I realized that a huge part of my life was my time volunteering at the Esplanade. I missed the various activities, both social and educational, the people, the friends that I have met and will always cherish, the opportunities to attend and appreciate the events in the theatre and in the galleries. I’m very proud to be associated as an active volunteer with such a beautiful, amazing community asset.” – Joy Thomson

“It’s a fun way to spend time with like minded people both old and new.” – Lynda Zimmer

“Volunteering at the Esplanade gives me a sense of purpose. I really enjoy working in the discovery centre helping with the children’s classes.” – Steven Slater

“I truly enjoy volunteering at the Esplanade in any capacity.

The fellowship and camaraderie with the other volunteers and patrons make it a joy.

The Esplanade has so much to offer. There is always something for everyone.

The Esplanade is very appreciative of their volunteers which adds to the fulfillment of volunteering.” – Gail Macdonald
