Viva Vitality: Be a friend on the pathways

By LAURA LUKYE on July 8, 2021.

The sun is shining and the weather is warm, and it seems like many people are getting out and using the community pathways. Pathways are safe places where people can get outside and be active, including pedestrians, cyclists, inline skaters, pets and individuals with mobility impairment. If everyone can follow some simple tips, we can help keep pathways safe and enjoyable for everyone.

• Be COVID alert – Even though mask regulations have relaxed, it’s still a good idea to follow physical distancing guidelines and a wear mask when physical distancing is not possible.

• Be mindful of others – Staying to the right and passing on the left, and moving off to the side when stopping. Be predictable and stay in your lane.

• Be alert and seen – To make injuries preventable you need to know your surroundings, make sure you can hear others approaching, ditch the phone and headphones so you are alert to others. Always check when you are crossing the path for other pedestrians. Also, make sure people can see you; if using the path at night, wear reflective clothing.

• Cyclists – Always wear a helmet when biking. If you are using a shared path, make sure to slow down and give plenty of space when passing others. Use your bell or say “on your left” to alert others that you are passing.

• Pet owners – It’s always fun to have a buddy to enjoy the pathway with and many of us love to take our pets for a walk. Always remember to keep your pets on a leash and clean up after them. Do not allow your pet to block the pathway; move off to the side if your pets needs a break.

• Be a friend on the pathway – Be considerate to others and remember cyclists, skateboarders, and inline skaters need to yield to pedestrians. Be courteous to everyone and everything around you.

Remember pathways are a shared public space – safety and courtesy make for a positive experience for everyone. So, following these simple tips will make your experience enjoyable. Get outside and enjoy your beautiful community by being active on pathways.
