Insurance Understood: Who loves a mullet?

When was the last time that you saw a mullet? Did you take a picture? Did you talk about it with your friends? I am pretty sure that anyone who grew up in the 1970s or ’80s had a mullet at some point. Secretly, deep down, everyone loves a mullet.

A mullet is a hairstyle where your hair is cut short on the front and sides of your head but is left long on the back. A popular saying for a mullet is “business in the front, party in the back.”This is describing how someone can be proper and orderly – the front and sides, but still loosen up and have fun – the long back. Mullets represent a unique balance between business and fun.

Our team at Swell Private Wealth had a chuckle this past week when I compared the work we were doing for a new client to a mullet. The new client owns multiple companies, has scattered financial and insurance dealings and simply wanted clarity and confidence back in his/her life. I am always amazed at the clutter and confusion people are trying to deal with by themselves. For a lot of people they are overwhelmed when it comes to financial transitions and decisions. You don’t have to tackle this alone. For our new client, we took the edge off by getting to his/her core values and goals. This is the business part of the equation. Meaningful questions were asked and a deep dive into behavioral finances was explored. On the back end we pieced it all together and had a party while we did it. We organized all of their dealings into concise summaries and built a new professional team by bringing in and collaborating with a corporate lawyer, an accountant and a home/auto agent.

The client loved the process and shared it with close friends immediately. When you have a real party in life people want to be part of it and are attracted to it. Nothing is better than making a positive impact in someone’s life. The financial world can be complex but that is the business side of things. Make sure you have fun on the journey. When you balance the two you will be able to relax and spend more time doing the things you want with the people you love. It may be a challenge to find a real mullet, but they are out there and are gems when you find them.
