All Psyched Up: It’s time to grow up

By Medicine Hat News on May 4, 2018.

So often I hear individuals talk about how we are living in an age of entitlement where many think that the world owes them not just a living but a luxurious lifestyle. Not true! Those who have this attitude often end up destroying relationships and facing financial problems.

It takes effort over time to build a life of blessings.

If you want to be wealthy you will need to invest yourself in a career or business that will prosper over the years. Get-rich-quick schemes are usually an illusion that steals your hopes and money. Those who have a financially comfortable retirement are more often than not people who started out poor but worked consistently and saved a portion of their earning for decades.

If you want to travel, set your destination goal and don’t leave the house until you have enough money to pay all the expenses that you will incur. The concept of “fly now, pay later” just leaves you with a pile of bills that will take the thrill of the travel experience when you arrive home.

If you want to enjoy good health, you will be wise to adopt good habits. Eat nutritiously, exercise, get enough sleep and limit the amount of salt, sugar and caffeine that you consume.

If you want to have good relationships with family and friends you will need to pay attention to their needs and interests as well as your own. Learning how to forgive will also help cement the bonds and remove any bad feelings between you and others.

If you want to leave a legacy, you need to start planning it now. I am surprised by how many people never write a will. The result of neglecting this can be years of administrative hassle for your family and the possibility that your assets will never be used the way you think they should.

If you think the world should improve in a particular way, then get involved. Sitting back and complaining doesn’t bring peace or progress to your environment. Volunteering does.

If you are lonely, take action. Find a way to get around people. Take a course, learn a skill, visit a shut-in, coach a sport, join a club. There are more than seven billion people in the world and many of them would love to have a friend like you!

If you have been hurt find a way to heal. Research options. Consult with specialists. Talk to those others who have overcome similar difficulties. Set a health goal and begin moving towards it.

If you need to downsize or clean up a messy area in your life, start today. Break it down into small manageable pieces and begin taking action. Even one hour a day can make huge improvement on a neglected project.

Maturity doesn’t always come with age. When you take responsibility for your situation without expecting other people to meet all of your needs and wants, you will enjoy healthy pride and a spirit of independence. It’s not about growing older. It’s about growing up!
