Business Beat: Entrepreneur leads business school

By medicinehatnews on June 16, 2021.

The new leader of Medicine Hat College’s business programs is bringing experience in entrepreneurship, business leadership, and academia to the table.

Timothy Spielman, Dean of Business and Continuing Studies, has lived in Alberta all his life but has had the opportunity to work around the globe and has spent significant segments of his career in both academia and industry. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Alberta and holds a Masters’ in Business Administration. His industry experience spans consulting with multinationals across three continents to leading several technology start-ups.

However, he has always considered academia a key element of his career since his first opportunity to instruct accounting and technology courses with SAIT over 25 years ago. Timothy has served in both faculty and management roles with several universities, polytechnics, and colleges in Alberta and British Columbia.

When presented with an opportunity to lead the newly restructured School of Business and Continuing Studies here in Medicine Hat, he jumped at the opportunity. Spielman says MHC is well positioned to leap forward as an institution and he is looking forward to being part of that innovative transformation.

There is a lot of progress to share.

The School of Business and Continuing Studies is launching a Post Diploma Certificate in Accounting this fall. Professionally recognized by CPA Alberta, the certificate includes innovative new programming in the use of data analytics.

Next year, the School will launch three new diploma programs. This includes the Service Dog and Canine Management diploma, Sports and Event Marketing, and a cutting-edge diploma in Sustainable Innovation.

The Service Dog and Canine Management diploma will see the School move into the realm of having service dogs in training on campus. The Sport and Event Marketing diploma is laser focused on graduating students that can excel in supporting existing events including professional sports and renowned special events. Even more exciting is the opportunity to graduate the next generation of leaders who are focused on innovation and sustainability with the first-of-its-kind Sustainable Innovation diploma in Canada.

Spielman’s School is linking with industry across the province, and has begun sourcing some of the best subject matter experts across Canada to create these innovative new programs. Part of the excitement is the ability to create a more sustainable and innovative environment in a very special corner of Alberta.

The opportunity to share new programming, and create an ecosystem of sustainability and innovation that serves our region, is important to the college and School of Business. You can connect with Timothy by email at tspielman@mhc.ab.ca.
