Carbon tax in Norway has been a success since 1991

By Letter to the Editor on January 23rd, 2019

In his Jan. 11 letter to the News, MP Glen Motz includes the following two sentences regarding carbon taxes in Norway: “Norway has had both a carbon tax and oil and gas industry. Their emissions have gone up.” This statement is correct as Norway’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2017 were 52.7 million tonnes, up ... Read More »

Another side to the ‘Sixties Scoop’ story

By Letter to the Editor on January 22nd, 2019

I’ve recently been hearing lots about the federal government’s Sixties Scoop program. Apparently the Liberals plan on giving a cash settlement to every First Nations child who was ‘scooped’ away from their parents in the 1960s. These First Nations children were then placed in foster care. We have all heard over and over what a ... Read More »

Apology extended

By Letter to the Editor on January 21st, 2019

On Jan. 12 a letter was published in the Medicine Hat News that I submitted in December. In the letter I made a reference to the Marxist party. I’d like to retract the reference and apologize to Peter Mueller. It was a thoughtless comment. Peter, please accept my apology and I will try to do ... Read More »

Something in the water in Edmonton?

By Letter to the Editor on January 19th, 2019

Aw, shucks. After four years of pinko commie gender neutral feminism in Alberta some unwashed chattering class member of Alberta had the audacity to disagree with her Imperial Highness Princess Minister of Alberta Trees and Air Shannon Phillips. To make matters worse someone has cast aspersions on her staff by wishing their issues to be ... Read More »

Mall recycling not all that it seems

By Letter to the Editor on January 19th, 2019

Recycling at Medicine Hat Mall is not all it seems. The new waste sorting system at the mall confuses many. It is a learning process first of all; but secondly it is also pointless. Not that this writer finds recycling pointless. Au contraire, this writer knows the mall does not recycle anything but the bottles, ... Read More »

CCDA has great value

By Letter to the Editor on January 19th, 2019

The City Centre Development Agency (CCDA) should continue to receive a $100,000 grant from the city. In fact, a good case can be made for increasing the amount. In support of this position I will attempt to address some of the criticisms directed at the CCDA. 1. Not all members of the downtown community are ... Read More »

Impressed with improvements in downtown area

By Letter to the Editor on January 18th, 2019

Went for a slow walk recently around all those downtown streets and avenues that had the advantage of that wonderful effort at, shall we say, rehabilitation. I had already seen earlier efforts on Second Street, but on this recent walk it was revealed to me just how serious all downtown enthusiasts were about their plans ... Read More »

Compounding taxes

By Letter to the Editor on January 17th, 2019

As the old saying goes, “A good accountant can take one set of numbers and give you three different answers.” Fast forward to the city’s latest budget plan which calls for a four-year budget cycle. I personally don’t think any government can accurately predict four years in advance. Period. So why change to a four-year ... Read More »

The price we pay for free speech

By Letter to the Editor on January 16th, 2019

Re: “Catholic vicar under fire for homophobic remarks,” Jan. 10 It used to be when we heard something we didn’t like, we would ignore it and move on. How is it we have become such a snowflake society, that now news is covering people’s hurt feelings? Remember, “sticks and stonesÉ.” Both parties in this controversy ... Read More »

Let’s not be fooled by wind and solar

By Letter to the Editor on January 16th, 2019

For the last decade or more the Canadian public has been conditioned to believe that man-made CO2 added to the atmosphere will have an apocalyptic effect on our future climate. Following up, and equally well sold, is the ostensible need for “renewable” electrical power generation to replace dependable and affordable fossil fuel based generation. If ... Read More »

Minister milking issue

By Letter to the Editor on January 16th, 2019

I think we have only one side of the story of the Saudi teen seeking asylum. Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland is milking this for political reason.Secondly, what about the other millions of refugees? Will they get special treatment? Why are we not hearing how much this will cost overtaxed Canadians? By the way, I ... Read More »
