Things are back to normal for Hatter Sandy Kapeller after she travelled to Winnipeg earlier this month to spend some time with 600 others from across North America.

The group shares one thing in common — a love for retro trailers — and met Aug. 15-19 at Red River Exhibition Park. It was a long weekend to remember.

“It was such an amazing time,” Kapeller said. “Just so much fun to be there with everyone.

“We took up the whole park — there was so many of us I actually had to use a bike to ride around to see everyone’s trailers — it was a great weekend.”

Kapeller’s is a 1974 Trillium Trailer she calls Miss Daisy, and everyone present had a different theme.

“We saw some really amazing trailers,” said Kapeller. “Everyone has their own spin on their trailer and it is always really fun to see what people come up with.

“Some people leave them in their original state but some cool ones were bee-themed, Coca-Cola-themed and we even saw a guy dressed as Santa with a trailer.”

Kapeller spent the weekend with her daughter Brooke, who is studying at Brock University in St. Catherines, Ont. She says it was great to spend some time together.

“Since she lives out there, we don’t spend very much time together,” she said. “She tries to come home for things like reading week and in December but it’s never enough time.

“It was a great weekend with her and I was sad to take her back to the airport.”

Kapeller did multiple interviews with various news organizations both on the way to and while in Winnipeg, and says the weekend was all in the name of fun.

“This huge group, it’s almost like a family,” she said. “There’s so many people you don’t know but since you have a similar trailer, you’re super friendly with them.

“This event was held just for fun and the weekend was definitely one to remember.”
