Sandy Kapeller is set to go on quite the unique trip to Winnipeg this month.

Kapeller, alongside roughly 600 others from around North America, will be travelling to and staying in Winnipeg’s Red River Exhibition Park — all because of a shared interest.

“The thing that connects all of us is our trailers,” she said. “This year is the 50th anniversary of the Boler trailer, which was the original fiberglass trailer — they actually started out in 1968 as septic tanks.”

“Because it’s the 50th anniversary people will be coming from all over Canada, Alaska, Texas and a lot of other places.”

The fiberglass trailers are easy to pull and take up much less space in the driveway than newer, larger trailers and the retro trailers are usually customized, says Kapeller.

“Almost everyone puts their own touch on their trailer, but some people keep them true to their original form,” she said. “They have a lot of personality to them and people really come up with some great themes — when you go to an event like this you can really be blown away by other peoples’ trailers.

“My trailer is a 1974 Trillium, I call her Miss Daisy — it’s the first one I got.”

Kapeller says the hobby is a very big passion of hers, and many others are getting into the retro trailers.

“Just a week ago I had four of them — I’ve sold two and still have two,” she said. “You meet a lot of people when you go to something like this and there’s always a wide range of ages — you’ll see young teenagers and people in their 80s — it’s a really great time.”

Kapeller says these trips are great bonding experiences.

“It’s all in the name of fun — it’s why so many of us are passionate about this,” she said. “I do a lot of these trips with my daughters and it is always a fun time for us.”
