The Saskatoon Farm near Calgary hosts a garden centre, general store and has some of the best fresh fruits and vegetables around.

If you’re looking for a day trip within Alberta the Saskatoon Farm located about 30 minutes south of Calgary is a must-see destination.

Paul and Karen Hamer purchased the farm in 1987 when it was just a barley field. They started planting Saskatoon bushes and have built up the farm into something quite amazing.

We arrived at the farm early in the morning and had breakfast in the cafe. Serving breakfast and lunch, the cafe has a menu with everything made from scratch with ingredients grown right at the farm. The indoor and outdoor seating areas hold up to 180 guests and they were hosting two large weddings that day. We topped off our meal with a heavenly Saskatoon pie with Saskatoon ice cream.

The Garden Centre has perennials, annuals, fruit, ornamental and shade trees, shrubs and hanging baskets for sale. Fresh vegetables filled the farmers’ market and are available daily throughout the summer.

Our next stop was the bakery where you can take home pies, tarts, and scones. We picked up a frozen Saskatoon pie to take home with us.

The junction of the Sheep and Highwood River valley offers stunning views and can be seen from a vantage point on the property while beautiful flower beds complement the colourful buildings.

Delicious strawberries were in season when we were there while the Saskatoon and cherry u-pick will start in late July. You can spend a couple hours just looking around the General Store which has unique furniture, home decor and other things as well. We are really glad we made the trip and will definitely go back again.
