Viva Vitality: Celebrating World Oral Health Day

By Kaleigh Southwell on March 27, 2026.

March is the beginning of spring, but also a time to celebrate one of your greatest assets: your smile! March 20 marked World Oral Health Day, a global campaign that reminds us how important it is to care for our mouths and, in turn, our overall well-being.

The mouth and body connection

Your mouth is really a reflection of your overall health. A clean, healthy mouth doesn’t just make you look and feel good; it can also protect you from harmful diseases. Studies show that gum disease can be linked to heart disease, diabetes, cancer, respiratory issues, and even pregnancy complications. The message is clear: when you care for your mouth, you care for your whole body.

A happy mouth is a healthy body

The World Dental Federation, which leads the World Oral Health Day campaign, encourages everyone to take charge of their oral health. A healthy mouth can contribute to a happier life, because good oral hygiene can improve your confidence, comfort, and your overall quality of life.

Small steps, big impact

You don’t need to make huge changes to see big results. Here’s how you can celebrate World Oral Health Day and start fresh this spring:

• Brush and floss daily: Brush twice a day for two minutes and floss at least once to remove plaque where your brush can’t reach.

• Eat smart: Choose foods that strengthen your teeth-think crunchy vegetables, leafy greens, and calcium-rich dairy. Limit sugary snacks and sodas that fuel bacteria.

• Use fluoride: fluoride in our toothpaste and at our annual dental check-ups helps to strengthen and protect our teeth from cavities.

• Schedule your dental visit: If it’s been a while since your last check-up, March is a good time to book one. Prevention keeps small issues from becoming big problems.

Why it matters

Oral health often doesn’t get the attention it deserves, but it affects nearly every part of our lives. From enjoying your favourite foods, to speaking with confidence, your mouth plays a vital role every single day. Taking a few minutes to care for it is one of the simplest and most powerful acts of self-care.

Let’s commit to working towards healthier, happier smiles. For more information and recommendations on oral health please visit primarycarealberta.ca/oralhealth.
