The City of Medicine Hat Snow Angels program allows members of the community to help their neighbours with snow clearance.--Submitted photo
Winter in our community brings beauty – but also challenges. For many residents, snow-covered sidewalks can mean isolation, missed appointments, and safety risks. That’s where the Snow Angels program comes in: a simple yet powerful initiative that transforms those challenges into opportunities for kindness and connection.
The program is a collaborative initiative between the City of Medicine, Unison at Veiner Centre, Medicine Hat Police Services’ Municipal Bylaw Enforcement, and Neighbourhood Associations of Medicine Hat.
Although mother nature has been an effective Snow Angel this week with unseasonably warm temperatures melting nearly all snow around the city, the program is more than just snow removal. It’s about helping neighbours stay safe, independent, and connected during the coldest months of the year. By lending a hand, volunteers make it possible for residents to get to essential appointments, pick up groceries, and visit loved ones – all while fostering a stronger, more caring community. Some benefits of the program include:
Safety and accessibility: Clear sidewalks keep our community safe for everyone – especially those using mobility aids, families with young children, and emergency responders.
Support for vulnerable residents: Older adults, individuals with health or mobility challenges, those recovering from surgery, and parents with young children often face barriers to clearing snow. Snow Angels helps them maintain independence and access vital services.
Stronger community bonds: Small acts of kindness create ripple effects. When neighbours help neighbours, it fosters trust, belonging, and resilience.
Volunteer opportunities for all ages: Youth, families, and community groups can make a tangible difference while staying active and connected.
As of January 1, 2026, 21 residents have registered for assistance within the Snow Angels program. Most residents face multiple challenges, which shows compounding vulnerability. The following needs have been identified – recipients could select multiple reasons for requiring the service:
– 71% (15 residents) are seniors unable to safely shovel.
– 62% (13 residents) have health limitations.
– 57% (12 residents) face mobility challenges.
– 52% (11 residents) live alone.
– 48% (10 residents) experience financial barriers to hiring snow removal.
– 10% (2 residents) are recovering from surgery or temporary health issues
Residents have expressed deep gratitude for the Snow Angels program, describing it as a lifeline during the winter months. Many have shared how the service eased financial and physical burdens, allowing them to stay safe and independent. Others highlighted the sense of community it fosters – one resident noted that a neighbour helped immediately after the Snow Angels sign was displayed. From those recovering from surgery to individuals living with mobility challenges, the message is clear: Snow Angels make a meaningful difference and reminds us of the caring spirit that defines our community.
Residents wanting to take part in the program and be a snow angel in their neighbourhood can look for program signage in front yards or in windows. If you a sign, we encourage you to grab a shovel and lend a hand. Every cleared sidewalk is more than snow removed – it’s a step toward a safer, stronger, and more connected community.
Together, we can turn winter’s challenges into opportunities for kindness.
