Halloween is just around the corner – a time of ghosts and goblins, of spooky monsters and unexplained phenomenon. Even Canada Post jumped on the bandwagon a few years ago, issuing three different series of stamps titled Haunted Canada. These stamps portrayed famous specters and phantasms from across Canada.
The first series of five stamps was issued in 2014, comprised of five stamps in the “P” or permanent postage denomination. The stamps portrayed The Ghost Bride of the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, Alta.; The Fiery Ships of the Northumberland Strait, N.S./P.E.I.; The St. Louis Light Phantom Train, Sask.; The Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac’s Ghostly Governor Louis de Buade, Count of Frontenac, Que. and Niagara-on-the-Lake’s haunted Fort George. Pictured is the Souvenir sheet format of these haunting apparitions.
The next year the second series of five was released, again in the “P” denomination. Portrayed were the Brakeman Ghost of Vancouver; Ghost of Marie-Josephte Corriveau, Levis Que.; Gray Lady of the Citadel, Halifax; Red River Trail Oxcart, Winnipeg; and the Ghost of the Caribou Hotel, Carcross, Yukon.
In 2016 was the third and last series of Haunted Canada in the “P” pricing. Featured were the Bell Island Hag, Nfld.; Dungarvon Whooper, N.B.; Lady in White, Que., Winter Garden Theatre, Ont. and the Phantom Bell Ringers, P.E.I.
All three series were issued in a perforated souvenir sheet of the five stamps with water-activated gum and well as booklets of 10 stamps (two of each variety) with self-adhesive gum.
I would like to thank everyone who attended our Club’s recent Coin and Stamp show at the Stampede Grounds and hopefully see you at one of our Club meetings at the Victory Lutheran Church the second and fourth Tuesday of each month 7 p.m.
Happy Halloween!
