What a busy weekend we just had. I am sure that many of you also participated in the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede. Once again, Praxis was fortunate to be invited to the Methanex Kiddies Day. I absolutely love putting together the activities as I need to have such an array of science experiments so that all age groups can participate. I think one of the favourite stations this year was the “science puzzles.” My volunteer was able to challenge participants of all ages! This week, I thought I would share another one of my favourites. Let’s get started! *Remember to ask an adult before doing this experiment. Materials • A piece of rope or string about one metre long. Objective To tie a knot in the middle of a piece of rope or string. This is not as easy at it sounds. There are a number of rules you must follow. Procedure 1. You have to hold one end of the rope or string in each hand at all times, fists closed/clenched, never letting go. 2. Once you pick up the rope, you cannot put it down. 3. You cannot use your fingers, toes, feet, mouth etc. to help you tie the knot. 4. Still having trouble? Do not give up, here is a hint: you may have to do something with your body before you pick up the rope. Think about this and try again. If you are still unable to do this, the answer is provided below. What is going on? In order to solve this, you have to do the following: Cross your arms over your chest as if you are really angry. One hand will be tucked under your armpit. Without undoing your arms, bend down and pick up one end of the rope. Your other hand will be resting on your bicep. Without undoing your arms, bend down and pick up the other end of the rope. Without letting go, uncross your arms. If you do this correctly, there will be a knot tied in the middle of the rope. Did you know that doing science puzzles such as these can increase memory, problem solving skills and even brain health? Why not find some more to challenge yourself and most important of all have fun solving them! Mark your calendars for the praxis AGM on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. We are always looking for new board members that want to share their love of science. Contact Praxis for further details.
