For many in our community, making ends meet has become increasingly challenging. The post-Holiday Season often amplifies financial strain, leaving little room for events and activities that foster connection and joy. Recognizing these challenges, the City of Medicine Hat offers a variety of programs and services designed to assist residents in meeting their basic needs while staying connected to the community. One such initiative is the Fair Entry program, which ensures Medicine Hat residents have reasonable access to a range of public services. Designed to specifically assist low-income families and individuals, the program provides access to subsidies on services including: • Recreation user fees: Participants can save 75% on regular-priced recreation programs and admissions at city-run swimming pools and leisure centres. Each person is eligible for up to $200 in assistance annually. • Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre education programs: Families can save 75% on educational programs directly provided by Esplanade staff, with a maximum annual benefit of $200 per person. • Transit monthly passes: The program covers 75% of the cost of monthly transit passes, up to an annual maximum of $630 per person. This component is partially funded by the Government of Alberta. To learn more about eligibility and how to apply, visit medicinehat.ca/fairentry, email fairentry@medicinehat.ca, or call 403-502-8001. The Community Warmth program provides additional support to Medicine Hat utility customers facing financial hardship. This program offers one-time emergency funding and connects individuals to community support services. Residents may qualify for relief if they have received a utility disconnect warning notice, are experiencing financial challenges beyond their control, have not received assistance from this program in the past year, and are willing to complete an application. For more information or to apply, email customer_accounts@medicinehat.ca, call 403-529-8113, or visit medicinehat.ca/communitywarmth. Residents struggling to pay utility bills are encouraged to contact the Collections team early at collections@medicinehat.ca to explore payment options. For families seeking free and affordable activities, the city and Kinsmen-sponsored public skating programs offer fun-filled opportunities at indoor rinks throughout the winter. Skate schedules are available at medicinehat.ca/skateschedule. Mark your calendar for the Servus Family Free Skate on Jan. 26, from noon to 4 p.m. at Co-op Place. Glide into a winter wonderland filled with joy, laughter and the company of your favourite Frozen sister for a magical afternoon. Outdoor recreation is another great way to stay active and connected. Enjoy skating at outdoor rinks, exploring our extensive trail network, or visiting parks and playgrounds. For an exhilarating family outing, the tobogganing hill at Kin Coulee Park offers a well-lit area with nearby washrooms. This year, the Cypress Nordic Ski Club is introducing cross-country skiing at Kin Coulee Park – an exciting new opportunity for winter sports enthusiasts. Email cypressnordic@gmail.com to learn more. Admission to the galleries and museum at the Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre is offered on a Pay What You Will basis. You decide the price of admission, and “free” is a perfectly acceptable choice! ‘Gallery Play with Sensational Path’ is a Pay What You Will experience running at the Esplanade Jan. 18, 25 and Feb. 8 and 22, from 1-3 p.m. Young learners are invited to get hands on for a playful and experimental experience, helping them develop a wide range of skills through play, self-care and social interactions. By offering accessible recreation, financial relief and cultural experiences, we aim to ensure everyone in Medicine Hat has the opportunity to thrive, stay active and have fun.
