Science Smarts: Who needs summertime when we can make Snowman Slime?

By Patty Rooks on January 4, 2025.

I do not think there is anything more fun to play with than slime! Over the years, I have experimented with various materials in order to come up with some of my favourite “recipes.” Different recipes are needed for different kinds of slime. In keeping with our winter theme this month, I thought I would share some Snowman Slime. Let’s get started!

*Remember to ask an adult before doing this experiment.

Materials

– White glue

– White/iridescent glitter

– Baking soda

– Contact solution

– Small jar

– Black marker

– Orange marker

– Measuring spoons

– Measuring cups

– Mixing bow

– Mixing spoon

Procedure

1. On the clear jar, using the markers, draw a snowman face to store your slime in. This will keep it fresh for a long time. Once finished set aside.

2. In the missing bowl measure and add 250 mL (one cup) of white glue, 15 mL (one tablespoon) contact solution, 7.5 mL (1/2 tablespoon) baking SODA and as much glitter as you want.

3. Mix well.

4. Remove from the bowl and enjoy!

5. Store your slime in the special jar when not in use otherwise it will dry out.

What is going on?

This slime experiment is a bit different from the others in that it uses contact lens solution. All Slime “recipes” call for an activator. An activator is something that can cause the chemical reaction and ultimately allow the slime to form. The activator brings everything together. The contact lens solution contains special ingredients called boric acid and sodium borate that bind all of the ingredients into one ooey gooey slimy mess!
