Medicine Hat and area is being invaded and threatened by a creeping invasion, happening slowly, day by day. What are they, and how are they threatening? They are non-native invasive plants, moving into the region at an alarming rate – sometimes unintentionally, but often planted purposefully by unwary gardeners. Once they escape the garden, other desirable plants in parks and natural areas are slowly choked out. These pretty invasive plants are mistaken for innocent wildflowers until they predominate, and spread to other areas along roads, trails, rivers, animals – and us! We are all part of this problem, and we all need to help with the solutions! To learn more, register at eventbrite.ca to attend Medicine Hat’s Most Unwanted – Invasive Species Workshop 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. on May 4, at the Police Point Park Nature Centre. Lunch and door prizes available! For more information call the Nature Line at 403-529-6225. Kelly Cooley is Southern Alberta weed control coordinator in Medicine Hat. 7
