Philanthropy is “the love of humankind” and National Philanthropy Day, Nov. 15, is the day that people around the world come together to celebrate the charitable work that everyone does to make a difference and create impact in their community.

Canada was the first country in the world to officially recognize Nov. 15 as National Philanthropy Day. On that day, says Chris Christie, executive director of the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta, we honour those who give so much of their time, talents and treasures, as well as organizations that work in our community. As our former Governor General David Johnson said, “It is an innate Canadian instinct to share!”

Many Hatters are already heavily engaged in vitalizing their community in sports and recreation, social issues, the environment, arts and culture, education and health. Is your philanthropic footprint the gift of:

Time?Do you give as a coach, a volunteer for your favourite charity, parent helper at school or a member on a volunteer board?

Talents?Perhaps you are gifted at social media, accounting, leadership, fundraising or providing one-to-one support?

Treasures:Do you donate goods or food — or your services/equipment?Do you make charitable cash donations to your favourite charities?(FYI: donations to the Community Foundation are pooled and the capital is never spent — only the investment income. It’s a gift today, tomorrow, forever!)

If you’re wondering how you can leave a better philanthropic footprint, call the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta at 403 527-9038.
