Ticked Off and Tickled Pink, Dec. 5, 2023

Tickled Pink

What a great job by the pipeline contractors cleaning up the pipeline right-aways around city. The City of Medicine Hat should always use local companies because we have the talent and know-how right here.

Ticked Off

The amount of money some spend on advertising for donations could be spent on those requested donations.

Ticked Off

Fire everyone at the city and let N. Frey run it, apparently she thinks she has all the right answers for 65,000 people. She seems to think she should put her stamp of approval on every city decision. Hiring, firing, pretty soon the city will be called out for buying a pen she doesn’t approve of.

Tickled Pink

That I was able to meet the top-ranked hockey player in Western Canada, circa 1979. He’s a real beauty and a local banking whiz now. Especially renowned in our area.

Ticked Off

The UCP body cites “financial pressures” for the closure of the Post – which supports mental health and is nonprofit – yet they support the oil companies. Where is the justice? Wake up people.

Ticked Off

The only way the Towne Square doesn’t cost the public money is if private enterprise builds it. They didn’t. Every grant is tax money. (Editor’s note: You’re right. Federal money is still public money, not necessarily tax dollars specifically, but public nonetheless. A little more than $3 million in federal money went into it. The federal budget for that year included about $190.3 billion for operating and capital expenditures, meaning roughly 0.0016%, or 1/62,500th of the budget was spent on Towne Square in Medicine Hat. And assuming we only count the 18.4 million Canadians who paid income tax that year as people who contribute monetarily to such things, we’re talking about 17 cents per person. So yes, if you want to split hairs, it still took public dollars. We stand corrected. It didn’t cost you zero. If you really want to suggest your own tax dollars contribute in some way to every single thing Ottawa spends money on, then there is an argument to be made that Towne Square personally cost you 17 cents.)

Tickled Pink

Friendly reminder that if you voted for the UCP in the last election, and now you’re upset The Post is closing, you’re just getting what you voted for. The funding cuts implemented by the UCP led to the closure of CMHA counselling services in Calgary earlier this year, and now we’re seeing the effects here at home too. Good or bad, that’s for you to decide, just don’t be surprised when Conservatives conserve money but cutting social programs.

Ticked Off

That someone would whine anonymously about Lorne Fitch’s article on the fragility of the southern Alberta water systems, saying they submitted similar articles that were not published. Is getting your name in print more important than the message? Sour grapes!

Ticked Off

Where is caffeine-free Pepsi in the stores? I do not want the diet stuff, only the caffeine-free Pepsi in the gold box. The first grocery store to stock it will get all my Christmas and New Year’s business, and I have two huge families to cook for.

Tickled Pink

That so many charities currently feature matching donations, so if I donate $50 it becomes $100. I’ve asked some of these charities how they are accessing these matching funds. The answers range from “anonymous donors,” to “I don’t know,” to complete silence, as if only a cad, bounder or cheapskate would dare ask such questions. Registered Canadian charities’ financial statements are public, so I’m curious how the matching donations appear on their books.

Ticked Off

Sick of the Christmas lights downtown being blue. Please bring back some cheerful colours like red and green. Blue is depressing.

Ticked Off

That a Riverside school sits as an eye sore the old abandon building in the neighbourhood. The publicly taxpayer supported owner needs to follow through or sell it. The old school house is devaluing the area.

Ticked Off

Why does Alberta have the highest usage of food banks in Canada yet there is a $5-billion surplus in budget? Something sure isn’t adding up.

Ticked Off

By the college writer who cares about cats but doesn’t approve of everyone who visits the library.

Tickled Pink

As a senior, never again will I wait endless hours for medical treatment at walk-in or emergency. I’m calling an ambulance. The province can afford it with their $5.5-billion surplus.

Ticked Off

With people who leave the ball hitch on their vehicles. You only need to pull the pin and put it in your trunk or behind the truck seat. Four-door trucks with ball attached stick way out in the drive path. It is dangerous. Even shorter vehicles present a danger to vehicles and pedestrians.

Ticked Off

Splitting up AHS with four different groups will cost Albertans more money. Each area will need management staff and administration. How is that going to spend health-care dollars responsible? Isn’t AHS top heavy already?

Ticked Off

Our premier (took) a huge group of people to Dubai. How many health-care workers would that pay for? How many teachers?

Ticked Off

Sad to see The Post go. Greed and lack of compassion. Period. The idea of moving locations is insane. Had parking and a real feel for the store. Oh well, feel bad for the people who the mission was set for. Sad.
