MLA Report: A time for all Canadians to stop and remember their sacrifices

By Justin Wright on November 15, 2023.

As the MLA for Cypress-Medicine Hat and government military liaison, I write this month’s MLA Report with reverence, as we recognize Remembrance Day – a day that serves as a tribute to the millions of Canadians who have served in the Canadian Armed Forces to protect our peace, freedom and democracy.

Canadian troops have displayed remarkable courage in various conflicts such as the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War, Afghanistan, numerous other international combat and peacekeeping operations. Through these efforts, they’ve earned a distinguished reputation for their bravery and unwavering defence of our freedom.

Remembrance Day unites Albertans and Canadians in paying tribute to the dedication and sacrifice of our armed forces.

Annually, Canadians pause to reflect in remembrance of those who served and gave their all in defending this nation’s freedoms and sovereignty.

With more than 2.3 million Canadians having served in the military and more than 118,000 making the ultimate sacrifice, their contributions are honoured and remembered.

Canadian soldiers played pivotal roles in historic battles like Normandy, Vimy Ridge and Juno Beach, while also playing key roles in peacekeeping efforts across the globe, due to their excellence and professionalism.

The Canada we know and love today is a result of their dedicated efforts and sacrifices.

This is also a moment to ensure current members of our armed forces and their families receive the recognition they deserve, knowing their ongoing efforts and sacrifices are appreciated and remembered.

It’s the responsibility of future generations to preserve the memory of these sacrifices.

Lest we forget the horrors of war, we must continue to defend the democratic values previous generations fought so hard to protect.

We must strive for a just and peaceful world, where future generations need not make the same sacrifices.

I ask all constituents join me in honouring those who served for the freedoms we enjoy and take for granted today. We will remember them.

Lest we forget.

Justin Wright is the MLA for Cypress-Medicine Hat
