Just Pondering: So much thanks

By Allyson McCaw on September 28, 2023.

Well, I am back this month after taking a break in August. Very hard to believe it is now the end of September and Thanksgiving is just around the corner.

I love this time of year and it is actually my favourite month of all. I was going to say I enjoy the crispness in the air but as I write this it is 20 C at 7 a.m.! What’s with that? However, on a typical morn in September you need a sweater and slip-on shoes instead of sandals to head off to work.

The air just smells different, and my memory wheel turns back to the farm days when harvest would be wrapping up, we were back in school and you would hear the geese honking on their way south.

I remember as a kid that wonderful sense of anticipation as you arranged your new school scribblers and wondering who you would sit beside in the desk row. Good grief, I was a nerd!

I also love Thanksgiving as a holiday as it seems lower key without all the trappings of Christmas, but still a family gathering with a whole lot of great food. It also was the one holiday that seemed a right of passage for anyone who has ventured away from home for the first time.

I will never forget my light-bulb moment when I realized how much my family meant and how I couldn’t wait to get home after leaving for college for the first time. Truly that same feeling continued for many years and now I see that same excitement in my grown children.

The only downside to Thanksgiving is the dreaded cold is coming and as I get older, I really don’t like it! However, my hubby taps me on the shoulder, grins like a Cheshire cat and reminds me, “Hey you were the one who wanted to move because you missed the four seasons!”

Lord, I hate it when he is right.

Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving from my family to yours. Take a moment and count those blessings because we all have them.

Stay warm and well.
