MLA Report: No balancing ‘Just Transition’ and Alberta’s economic realities

By JUSTIN WRIGHT on July 19, 2023.

As an MLA representing the people of Alberta and the Cypress-Medicine Hat constituency, I am keenly aware of the importance of addressing carbon emissions while ensuring the prosperity and well-being of our province.

The federal government’s “Just Transition” concept, which aims to achieve net-zero emissions, is an ambitious plan, but we must carefully consider its implications within the context of Alberta’s unique economic realities.

The concept of “Just Transition” focuses on the perceived need to shift away from fossil fuel dependence and toward cleaner, more sustainable energy sources. While this transition is viewed as essential for our planet’s future, it is crucial that it does not come at the expense of hardworking Albertans who rely on the energy sector for their livelihoods. We must strike a balance between environmental responsibility and economic stability.

Alberta has long been a leader in energy production, and our province’s resources have played a significant role in fueling the Canadian economy. However, the transition to net-zero emissions should not be a unilateral burden placed solely on Alberta’s shoulders. It is imperative that the federal government works collaboratively with our province to ensure a fair and equitable distribution of the costs and benefits associated with this transition.

The Premier of Alberta, in responding to “Just Transition,” rightly emphasizes the need for a measured approach that considers the economic impacts on our province. The Premier advocates for policies that support the development and adoption of new technologies, as well as a diversified energy portfolio that includes both renewables and cleaner hydrocarbons.

It is important to recognize that Alberta has made significant strides in reducing emissions and adopting cleaner technologies, such as carbon capture and storage. However, we cannot expect an overnight transformation without recognizing the practical challenges and limitations that exist.

To achieve a successful transition, we must invest in research and development, supporting innovation that facilitates the responsible extraction and use of our resources. Furthermore, we must ensure that our workforce receives the necessary training and support to adapt to new job opportunities arising from the transition.

Alberta has a wealth of expertise and knowledge in the energy sector, and we should harness this potential to continue being a leader in renewable energy development and technology. By fostering a supportive environment for investment and innovation, we can address not only the environmental concerns, but also create sustainable, well-paying jobs for our citizens.

As an Albertan MLA representing the constituents of Cypress-Medicine Hat, I must prioritize the well-being of our province’s residents and the stability of our economy. Collaboration between the federal government and Alberta is vital, ensuring a fair and equitable transition that acknowledges our unique circumstances and fosters economic growth while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

By striking the right balance, we can chart a path toward a sustainable future while safeguarding the prosperity of Alberta and its people.
