MP Report: Can you afford four more years?

By Medicine Hat News Opinon on September 7, 2019.

Canada is at a crossroad. The current Liberal government has made life more expensive and failed to help Canadians get ahead. Massive government debt and endless deficits will burden taxpayers for generations to come. Continued crushing taxes will only escalate under the Liberals uncontrolled spending. Add to this corruption and scandal at the highest level of our nation’s leadership and trust is shattered through broken promises, deception and ethical breaches.

Two thirds of Canadians feel that they either cannot pay their bills – or feel that they have nothing left over at the end of the month once they do. Almost half of all households report being less than $200 a month away from insolvency at month’s end. Nearly 50% of all Canadians report being overwhelmed by their debts, have stopped saving for retirement and are just trying to keep their head above water.

More than 80% of middle-income families are paying $800 or more in taxes every year since the current government came to office. It is hard enough to get ahead without government making it more difficult. Canadians have had enough.

Andrew Scheer and a Conservative government have a positive vision for Canada’s economy. It starts by government living within its means and putting more money in your pocket so you can get ahead. Families and businesses have to live within their means – Conservatives believe governments should too. We also understand that runaway deficits, with no plan to balance, can only mean one or a terrible combination of two things – massive future tax hikes or deep cuts to essential services to cover the spending.

Conservatives recognize that drastic spending cuts are not necessary to balance the budget. Quite simply, taking a responsible measured approach to spending will go a long way. Under Andrew Scheer’s leadership, any new spending not already budgeted must be paid for from savings elsewhere in government. This plan will not affect the Canada Child Benefit, seniors’ benefits, or transfers to provinces, as they are already budgeted for the long term and we are committed to them.

To make life more affordable for Canadians and leave more money in your pockets, a Conservative government will, among other measures, scrap the carbon tax, lower personal income taxes, remove the GST from home energy costs, make parental benefits tax-free and balance the budget.

In six weeks, Canadians have the opportunity to change the current direction our country is heading. We are all painfully aware of the damage done over the last four years. Another four years of Trudeau’s runaway spending and we will have an economic crisis on our hands.

There is much work to be done, but after Oct. 21, a new Conservative government will lead the changes that are needed to give Canadians a brighter future.

It’s time for you to get ahead.
