Letter: Smith warring with renewable energy is costing Alberta billions in investment

By Letter to the Editor on October 24, 2024.

Dear editor,

This past Tuesday (Oct. 22), a well written letter to the editor by Gail Lawrence expressed disappointment in Premier Smith’s spending of $7 million tax dollars to promote her anti environment/pro oil, coal and gas agenda.

This was Smith’s perverse declaration of war against “renewable energy projects,” a pathetic out-of-step-with-the-rest-of-the-world stand that will cost Alberta billions in investment money from numerous sources.

This recent ‘get tough’ with windmills and solar panels is, to a neutral observer, a replay of Don Quixote’s tilting at distant windmills. The Quixote of our time, Premier Smith, spurred on by David Parker, is willing to defend her fossil friends at all costs, even if it means wind and solar power builders, ready to build clean and efficient sources of free power in Alberta, are turned away.

Just three pages away in the same edition of the News (A7) is another article about the upcoming UCP AGM (November) at which the UCP membership will undertake to become even more Quixotic.

Members will gather together to reject science, shouting in unison, “There is no global warming crisis! The Earth needs more CO2!”

Glug, glug, glug.

Well said Peter. While these Reformers ignore the fact that it was Conservatives who created the Carbon Tax and 27 countries know it works these Reformers want to destroy the fact that we are all receiving more than we are paying out and some desperately need it, so why destroy that. But then Reformers have never been interested in looking after the well-being of the people only themselves and their Reform Party pals.
