Letter: Imperative for government operational funding to align with women’s shelter realities

By Letter to the Editor on October 9, 2024.

Dear editor,

In response to the article ‘Children and Family Services Ministry says it does provide funding for Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter.’

The Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society has not received an operational funding increase from the Government of Alberta in over 10 years. Despite the growing demand for services and rising operational costs, our shelter continues to operate on outdated funding levels, while meeting the needs of countless women and children in crisis.

Earlier this year, the province allocated $10 million to support shelters across Alberta. However, the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society did not receive any portion of this distribution.

While we remain committed to serving our community with the limited resources available, it is essential that operational funding aligns with current realities.

Shelters are a crucial part of Alberta’s social infrastructure, providing safety and support to those escaping violence.

The need for additional funding to sustain and expand our operations is clear, and we will continue to advocate for an increase to ensure that families in southeast Alberta can access the services they deserve.

Sincerely,

Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society board of directors
