Letter: City council fails us while real-life problems continue to mount

By Letter to the Editor on March 26, 2024.

Dear editor,

City council has completely failed the residents of Medicine Hat and is on track to continue to let citizens down over the next year-and-a-half.

For more than two years now, the mayor and council have been determined to allow infighting at city hall to be the municipality’s top priority rather than the welfare of citizens. This palace intrigue appears to have been distracting enough to totally blind council to the resentment building in the community regarding its actions and which were exemplified by the utility rate revolt last year.

And now as the city is facing a possible emergency due to drought conditions, the focus will again be thrust inward as a battle looms between a mayor in name only with staff and fellow councillors.

The city is also facing an epic scandal with the police as part of the fallout from the reign of the former MHPS police chief whose employment came to an ignominious end in 2022. Allegations in a recent lawsuit filed paint an unflattering picture of the conduct of police, to say the least.

There are no swans in the cesspool that city hall has become while the level of self-interest among its public servants over the greater good of the community doesn’t appear to have any limits.
