Letter: Leaders need to keep Bible out of their rhetoric

By Letter to the Editor on November 30, 2022.

Dear Editor,

Some politically far-right leaders misappropriate quotes from the Bible in order to make it sound like God wants Christians to be armed to the teeth with guns.

They take peoples’ deeply held religious faith and weld it directly to a hardcore right-wing political agenda.

They have the devout raising their hands and saying, ‘Amen. Hallelujah’, as they have a rapturous religious experience.

Christians advocating for conservative policies is nothing new, however I believe this new evangelism is more dangerous in that it evokes the spirit of white nationalism.

I think this is a mean-spirited, vulgar grab for political power using violent rhetoric. It enculturates followers toward violent behaviour.

Some of our Canadian conservative leaders skate on the edge of this hateful evangelism to attract the support and votes of such ‘believers.’
