Letter: When protesters use intimidation, it’s terrorism

By Letter to the Editor on February 9, 2022.

Dear editor,

With all the protesting occurring lately, those protesting should be aware of the difference between protesting and terrorism.

Terrorism is defined as “the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims.”

On Friday, the Eagle Butte High School incident was “terrorism.”

The protest that occurred outside the school was not aggressive. Still, once a group of parents used a student to open a side door and allow them to enter the school illegally, and the parents were egging on the students, it became terrorism.

The only purpose for the parents to enter the school and protest in the halls was to intimidate those sheltered in the school. There were staff and students that felt very unsafe and did not know what would happen.

Those adults that choose to participate in this action should acknowledge their mistake and apologize to those affected. These actions only distract from their core message and degenerate the cause.

I wonder how the same group would respond if Greenpeace had entered the building under the same circumstances and stomped up and down the halls chanting “No More Oil.”

Regards,

Alan Rose
