Letter: Reflecting on a Canada Day like no other

By Letter to the Editor on July 7, 2021.

Dear editor,

I am a proud Canadian, as I reflect on this great country, on this Canada Day.

My maiden name is Van Every. The Van Every’s fought in the Loyalist War and in the 1812 War. There are more Mohawk Van Every’s than the settler branch. I don’t know if there would be a Canada without our Indigenous brothers.

My mother’s father flew as a pilot in the first world war. His plane was a Siskin, he started the Waterloo Siskins Hockey team. As postmaster he helped a lot of Eastern European people emigrate to this country.

Canada is a land of opportunity. We now have the opportunity to look at our past honestly and deal with it. Hopefully we can do this together in a meaningful, respectful way.
