Letter: You can’t change the past, so focus on the future

By Letter to the Editor on February 19, 2021.

Dear editor,

There is an important rule that we used to try to follow in Mood Disorders. You shouldn’t should on yourself. Mood Disorders was a Peer Support group for Mental Health Consumers that I went to in Medicine Hat to from 1996 to 2008. It is the main reason I am a self advocate.

You shouldn’t should on yourself means you shouldn’t say; I shouldn’t have done this or that. Don’t think about how you got where you are. You can’t change your past. It is about your future.

You can get caught up in your past. Mental illness and addictions are illnesses. You need to accept that, don’t blame yourself and find the best treatment. That’s it. That’s all. Anger and blame can only hold you back.
