Letter: Power plant is an asset to Medicine Hat

By Letter to the Editor on February 5, 2021.

Dear editor,

It is interesting to see that there are members of council who think they should investigate the possibility of selling the only money generator outside of the taxpayer. For anyone who wants to think about this for a minute, back in roughly 2002-03, Pengrowth came to the city and offered $750 million for the gas utility, not including the legacy portion.

They realized the citizens would not go for that, but city council decided against it (there was no vote). Now you can go back and see who was on council at the time and see who is on council now.

It is so very sad to see the beautiful city that had so much potential and could have still had money in the bank. Citizens should make sure you do your homework on this issue and remember that while, in the case of the power plant, I do not support the sale, in the case of the gas utility assets I did support having that $750 million. And think also the city would not be cleaning up abandoned wells with that huge price tag.

Pay attention – this utility makes money. Electricity is produced with low-cost gas and is the most environmentally friendly aside from hydro.
