Letter: Power plant too valuable to part with

By Letter to the Editor on January 30, 2021.

Dear editor,

Trying to understand the intricacies of our citizen-owned utility is mind numbing. Those who have worked with it for years don’t understand all there is to know, so how can the ordinary citizen (who owns this utility) begin to grasp all the issues? How can the ordinary citizen contribute to the conversation?

Those who work with the utility and are ‘in the know’ tell us we have to unload this giant before green energy takes over, rendering our utility obsolete. In all honesty and in my very humble opinion, I don’t see proof of that happening soon. I don’t see (or hear of) other energy conglomerates, ‘unloading’ and going green.

What’s the alternative energy source, on our doorstep, that will turn our utility into a worthless dinosaur? Where is this alternative energy source operating now?

It must be a lot of work, looking after our (citizen-owned) utility, but when you see and you know how much income it has generated over the past 110 years, hasn’t the work been well worth the effort? And when you see and you know the cost savings to the citizens of Medicine Hat, doesn’t it make you want to fight even harder to keep it?

Vicki Thome
