Letter: Quebec’s advantages all too many

By Letter to the Editor on January 16, 2021.

Dear editor,

From 1963 to 1970, the FLQ terrorist group was responsible for 200 bombings, many robberies and the death of six people. Out of the FLQ’s actions rose Rene Levesque’s Parti Quebecois.

Federal Liberal governments since the 1970 October crisis have given in to Quebec demands. For example, Quebec is exempt from the federal government’s Carbon Tax. This gives them a significant competitive advantage over other provinces in Canada. Quebec is given $13.2 billion of the $19.1 billion Equalization Grant. The Energy East pipeline that was to feed crude oil into Atlantic Canada was stopped at the Quebec border because Quebec did not want it.

Yet, Quebec enjoyed billions of dollars in revenue from the West. Alberta has sent more money to the East than it has received for 55 years now. Quebec shows its gratitude to the West by accepting oil from countries with dictatorships, poor human rights records and poor environmental laws. Quebec, last year, had a $4.5 billion surplus and was talking about heated sidewalks in Montreal.

The dictators in the East are only interested in revenue from our resources.

The NDP want all hydrocarbons banned by 2040 and the Green Party sooner. The Liberals want hydrocarbons eliminated by 2050. This will make farming, forestry industries, mining and travel extremely expensive or non-existent. It is time to tell the East to keep their environmental laws, gun laws, federal debt and scandals, and look at terms of separation for Western Canada. Only then will we be masters of our own destiny.

Those of us from the world of finance get a little sick and tired of the ignorance displayed by people who are just too dump to understand how the equalization system works. It’s based on what a province is capable of generating in the form of revenues. That includes taxes, and in our case oil royalties and when you have ignorant governments who aren’t bothering to collect proper taxes and royalties , who are more interested in looking after their rich friends this is what you get.
Has Gordon forgotten that it was the Harper government with Jason Kenney as a member who increased payments to Quebec to buy votes?
Apparently he hasn’t been listening to our oil executives who want us to do something about our pollution, because the world does care and it’s the only way they are going to find new markets for their products.

I remember the days when Alberta was exempted from the Federal Carbon Tax just like Quebec. And then we elected Kenney and the UCP that complained Alberta was giving too much money to Ottawa.
And the first thing Kenney did was repeal Alberta’s Carbon Tax, even after being told the Federal Government would impose there’s on us.
So after listening to months of complaining from Kenney and his “blind” followers about giving Ottawa all of Alberta’s riches, he gave the Carbon revenue and control of that revenue over to Ottawa. Still waiting for him to justify that one.
He did this on the gamble that the CPC would with the election. In other words, he gambled and lost. Just the same as he gambled on guarantying a 7.5 billion investment to the Keystone XL project on the gamble of Trump getting re-elected.
Do you see a pattern here? Alberta does not need someone that should be going to a Gamblers Annonymous meeting to run this province. Alberta needs a leader with a sound and stable mind making decisions not based on the points spread of a political poll.
If you want to live in a society free of Canada’s social benefits and the cost associated with them, please move to the USA and take Kenney with half the UCP with you.

While he thinks he can sue Ottawa over the Carbon Tax Kenney wasn’t smart enough to realize that he would be fighting the oil executives who wanted it implemented, add in the stupid idea that he should put rural Albertans in a horrible mess by letting a foreign company pollute your water. Where is the intelligence in that? By slashing taxes by another 2% for the rich he has told farmers and ranchers he has no intention of trying to help them clean up this orphan well mess previous phoney conservative governments created for them. We saw how he tried to drive out rural Albertans doctors so he could close down your health care services.I wonder why more and more people are demanding a leadership review, I don’t blame them do you?

I’ve been calling for a review since he started attacking the Doctors. I cannot see how they (UCP) can turn things around where it will be favorable for them.
At least now they’re a few UCP MLAs starting to speak up. Now if they would start to vote for the people they’re “supposed” to be representing.

I’m sick of it also but every one of our federal governments has done it and Harper and Kenney were no different.
Don’t forget how these phoney conservatives helped their rich friends steal our oil and tax wealth and create a orphan well mess for our farmers and ranchers. They have literally destroyed our children’s future.
While many of us , including Ralph Klein’s father Phil and daughter Angie desperately tried to stop them from doing it we got called all sorts of names and in every case it was one of our fellow seniors who did the name calling. These phoney conservatives were their hero’s and could do no wrong. Now we are hearing the same thing from them while they believe every lie Kenney feeds them.
