By Letter to the Editor on October 31, 2019.
I have been writing letters to the editor for a long time now. When I first started I belonged to an organization called Mood Disorders. Mood Disorders was a peer support group for people for mental health consumers and I belonged from 1996 to 2008. In this 12-year period I got to know a lot of people, and this is the reason why I still sit on many boards advocating for that population.
I bring this up because on Oct. 26 SARC (Sexual Assault Response Committee) had its first annual gala which I attended as a director. I thought back to some of the people I knew in Mood Disorders most of who suffered childhood trauma either sexual, physical or emotional. I how it would have been wonderful to have something like SARC back then with the wonderful services we now have. I think about the Child Advocacy Centre which will help children and their families work through trauma so that maybe future mental illness will be prevented.
