See it before it’s too late

There’s something very special happening around our friendly region. Due to our arid climate, Medicine Hat is the only city in Alberta where prickly pear cactus and pin cushion cactus grow in great abundance. The drought of the past few years has increased their spread many times over.

To enjoy the splendid sight of the prickly pear in full bloom, head toward Echo Dale on the trail west of the airport and city water reservoir. Along to flats west of the first Texas gate the fields are blooming with the annual flowering pf the prickly pear. This beautiful display lasts only a few days, get out there before you miss it.

Be careful not to step on them though as the spikes will go right through shoe leather.
