UCP’s use of earplugs a matter of bullying, and not at all funny

By Letter to the Editor on July 2, 2019.

Thank you to Jason Kenney and the UCP for their stellar example of the enhanced Legislature decorum they recently insisted upon.

Their two-bit stunt of wearing earplugs in the Legislature while opposition members were speaking in debate was, for me, disappointing but not surprising. It has not taken long for the old, familiar Progressive Conservative sense of entitlement to show itself. That sense of entitlement greatly surpasses the UCP sense of decorum.

What their disrespectful stunt really said, as to decorum was “do as I say and not as I do.” Such a stunt in a courtroom would likely result in the miscreant being held in contempt by the judge, and being confined to a cell for a while. In a school classroom it would likely result in the offender being sent to the principal’s office.

Mr. Kenney’s juvenile attempt to justify their overt gesture of disrespect as a mere joke was to be expected. Bullies often say they were just joking. The UCP sense of entitlement also greatly surpasses their sense of humour.
