Excessive joint replacement wait times should be a wider concern

Ninety-nine per cent of knee replacements and 80 per cent of hip replacements are due to arthritis. A recent Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) wait times report shows that joint replacement surgery wait times in Alberta are too far away from the recommended guideline of six months Only 66 per cent of knee replacements and 70 per cent of hip replacements meet the guideline and that dramatically impacts quality of life for many people. With one in five Albertans living with arthritis today, providing better access to joint replacements and keeping people healthy where they live work and play should be a priority.
