Another energy option Medicine Hat should consider

By Letter to the Editor on February 5, 2019.

Superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) is an option Medicine Hat should consider. That’s the business of buying, storing and selling power.

Yes, you can store wind and solar energy. While SMES is high tech, it has been around for a couple of decades.

There is nothing after than SMES.

It’s environmentally friendly and can be located almost anywhere. I suggest and import/export location near a major grid line; the Suffield area comes to mind.

It’s not dependent on any one energy source so wind, solar or hydro power can be purchased. Buy during low demand and sell at peak power time. There could be short- and long-term storage serving Medicine Hat and the rest of North America.

In the near future power may be transmitted via micro-wave — ground and satellite relay. The technology existed decades ago. But a short time ago “energy experts” thought those promoting wind power were whistling in the wind.
