Khadr settlement absurd

By Letter to the Editor on February 2, 2019.

So, Canada is still having trouble with Omar Khadr — or vice versa. Why not let him go to Saudi Arabia and stay there?

He calls his travel restrictions an injustice, but the real injustice is to the Canadian taxpayers who had to fork over to him an undeserved $10 million.

To help him become an ordinary Canadian, a desire the new multimillionaire has been heard to express, we should freeze $10 million of his assets and let him find out what being an ordinary Canadian is really like. Prospering through litigation, seemingly a North American habit, does not make good citizens.

Khadr’s settlement was not only absurd, it was punitive to Canadians. Either the Supreme Court of Canada should wise up to reality or a much-needed law should be enacted to set reasonable upper limits on the court settlements that can be imposed.
