Story omitted important pact information

Re: “Hatters protest migration pact,” Dec. 10

Your unfortunate choice for Monday’s banner headline has me puzzled. I expected details on this pact, something that would justify passersby hurling insults at our prime minister.

Instead, I read that one of the protesters isn’t against immigration “because my family came here in 1635.” It took me less than a minute (online) to learn about the actual pact — a non-binding framework designed to help the international community deal with the sudden and urgent movement of humanity out of dangerous places. Would it have been so hard to give context for this protesters indignation?

I get it. He (and his vest wearing, flag-waving cohort) subscribe to the notion “anything Justin does, I disagree with,” but that is a poor substitute for front page news.

The willingness of the citizens of Canada (in general) and Medicine Hat (in particular) to support — through a variety of initiatives — refugee sponsorship suggests to me that the UN Pact on migration is just the sort of initiative we ought to support.

And, for the record, your ‘related story on A8’ reference was a mis-direction. The violence in France has nothing to do with immigration, and everything to do with fuel tax in France. The only possible connection is that the protesters at city hall chose to wear safety vests.
