Qualifications, not connections, needed to secure employment

Re: “OECD report highlights Indigenous underemployment,” Oct. 1

The story on the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development report cites a job seeker who was disadvantaged by having no “connections” to help him find a job.

I don’t recall ever knowing anyone who had “connections” to aid in job-finding. I didn’t know such things even existed.

A career hopeful had to acquire some qualifications and then search job postings wherever they could find them. You presented your best self at interviews, if you managed to get one, and hoped for success. If money was tight you looked for whatever you could get in the meantime.

If you belong to a group that receives special employmeent assistance, good for you. Otherwise you are on your own.
