Potential for marijuana intoxication worries teen

By Letter to the Editor on July 19, 2018.

I am a Grade 8 girl who had the pleasing of reading an article in the News about the Aurora Cannabis greenhouse that will be constructed in our hometown. This greenhouse will be providing lots of jobs for those who don’t have one, however I do have some concerns about the safety of our city. Safety is very important, yet nobody can protect us from all the dangers. In my opinion, the greenhouse will be bringing more dangers.

The first concern I possess would be the amount of crime that may take place due to the use of marijuana in a non-medical way. I fear more crashes, robberies and perhaps even deaths that may occur because people are using marijuana in an inappropriate way. Parents may start fearing even more about the safety of their children when they aren’t under the supervision of a trusted adult. I am a very cautious teen who doesn’t enjoy having bad thoughts about what our town might become after the construction of this large greenhouse.

I understand how great this greenhouse will be for our economy, but I don’t want to worry every time I leave my house about the danger that awaits with the people who are intoxicated by marijuana. Hopefully you will understand my concerns and perhaps there will be a way to reassure people that our community will still be safe.
