Another freedom taken away

By Letter to the Editor on July 4, 2018.

The Supreme Court of Canada has added another nail in the coffin of freedom in this country. It has sided with two provincial law societies which petitioned against a law school being established by Trinity Western University, on the grounds that its Christian standards of conduct might discomfort certain prospective students, particularly those of the LGBTQ community.

Most other provincial law societies have been more sensible.

The court’s decision might have been relevant if the proposed law school would have been the only one in Canada. As it is, students who might be uncomfortable with the Trinity Western rules can find other school in which they might be more comfortable. Students who favour the moral lifestyle and a more conservative approach to legal issues also deserve a compatible learning environment, especially as some secular universities now ban Christian activities and expression.

A free country would allow a full range of options to be offered.
