‘Clash of ideas’ offer made

By Letter to the Editor on February 14, 2018.

Re: “A grumpy old man, but with a sense of humour,” Feb. 6

I wonder if Paul McLennan realizes the daunting task he has, perhaps inadvertently, undertaken.

His most recent letter outlines (again) his view of those he loves to hate — “the left” and their supporters. Presumably he (and perhaps his supporters) are different.

What might that mean?

For starters, no calling people names when you don’t agree with them. That, Mr. McLennan says, is what people do when they “run out of valid or factual arguments.”

Agreed. No name calling in future columns and letters, Mr. McLennan. Just provide us with logical, factual arguments that support your opinions.

No expressions of “hatred and disdain for people [you] claim to oppose.” Especially for people you don’t even know. That, you say, is how “the left” suppresses discussion.

So, to be different from them, how about putting “hatred and disdain” on hold, at least until we get to know each other.

Let’s discuss instead of trading insults. We could be rational and polite while talking about politics, climate change, whether words really matter, and other contentious matters. We could enjoy the “clash of ideas,” and maybe even discover some common ground — preferably over coffee.

Just name the time and place. I’m not hard to track down. I’ll bet your frequent target, Peter Mueller, might even be willing to join us.
